Jadis, Zhuang Zhou
rêva qu’il était
un papillon, un
papillon voletant,
heureux, libre,
allant à sa guise.
Il ne savait pas
qu’il était Zhou.
Soudain il s’éveilla :
il était Zhou, bien lui-même.
Mais il ne savait plus
s’il était Zhou rêvant
qu’il était un papillon,
ou un papillon rêvant
qu’il était Zhou.
Entre Zhou et le papillon,
il y a pourtant une différence.
C’est ce qu’on appelle
la transformation des choses.

Once, Zhuang Zhou dreamed he was a butterfly,
a butterfly fluttering here and there, happy,
doing as he pleased. He did not know
he was Zhou.
Suddenly he woke, and there he was,
solid and unmistakably Zhou.
But he did not know if he was Zhou who had dreamed
he was a butterfly, or a butterfly dreaming he was Zhou.
Between Zhou and the butterfly there must be
some difference. This is called
the transformation of things.
